A literary tour of old Yokohama The tour takes you to places in Yamashitacho associated with foreign and Japanese writers. It begins with the former site of the Carey Hotel, from which Lafcadio Hearn, fresh off the boat, made forays into Yokohama and vicinity in 1890. Next it takes you to what was once called Blood Street, the setting of a comic story by Jack London and of a powerful ballad by Rudyard Kipling. The tour ends on the waterfront. Water Street was the location of the shop of novelist Shishi Bunroku’s father, and the Hotel New Grand was where Osaragi Jiro wrote and drank for a stretch of ten years.

Burritt Sabin was born in New York City in 1953. He was educated in New Jersey public schools and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He first came to Japan as a US Navy officer in 1975. He is the author of A Historical Guide to Yokohama: Sketches of the Twice-Risen Phoenix (Yurindo, 2002). He is a member of the Japan-America Society, the Yokohama no Kai, and the Yokohama International Tennis Community.

Darrell Allan Jenks was born in New Mexico, U.S. May 9, 1958. He worked for the US Forest Service as a firefighter in Burns, Oregon, then taught music and language at the Nichibei Gakuin in Takamatsu, Japan. He entered the Foreign Service in 1981, and is currently Director of Japanese Language and Area Training Center Yokohama. He can speak 9 languages, has a deep knowledge of Japanese culture, and is actively involved with the city of Yokohama.
